Problem Note 32768: "Import data task cannot open this file as data" when importing an Excel file in SAS® Enterprise Guide

In SAS Enterprise Guide, the following error message might appear when using the Import Data task to import certain Microsoft Excel files.
IMPORT DATA TASK CANNOT OPEN THIS FILE AS DATA
The problem can occur when the data contains invalid or missing values. For example, the error might occur if one of the imported columns contains date values such as 01/31/2008, but one or more values in the same column is formatted as 12312008.
To circumvent the problem, correct the Microsoft Excel data before importing.
